First Baptist Church of Siler City is seeking a Director of Music. The Position is a permanent part-time position in a traditional Baptist Church. The church’s current music program has been composed of mostly traditional hymns and music, but the church is willing to explore a lighter, more contemporary style. SCOPE OF THE JOB:
The Music Director’s work will include preparation, weekly choir rehearsals, Sunday morning services, and special services, including Christmas Eve, Christmas, and Easter. The Music Director will coordinate a weekly schedule with the Pastor.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND SKILLS:
- Must be of the Christian faith
- Bachelor’s degree in music preferred, but not required
- Must be able to plan, organize, and execute projects and tasks.
- Experience as a Music Director in a church preferred, but not required
- Energy, creativity, flexibility, motivational skills, and being a team player are critical traits for this position.
ACCOUNTABILITY: Reports to the Pastor or designee of the Pastor, with interaction with Personnel Committee as needed.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Select and provide suitable music for the morning worship and all other services as scheduled by coordinating music selections with the minister to select offerings that are compatible with the type of service, sermon topic, and season of the church year.
- Conduct the choir, including weekly choir rehearsals and other evening practices as necessary to provide meaningful, worshipful music which complement the worship service.
- Accompany the choir and congregation on the piano and organ (organ desired but may be worked toward.)
- Assist with funerals and weddings as available by either playing or helping to assist secure musicians.
- Utilize and develop the varied musical skills and abilities of the congregation and particularly the choir.
- If possible, attend staff meetings or otherwise coordinate with Pastor. Represent music programs at various church leadership meetings as needed.
- Communicate needs and concerns related to the music program to the Deacons and Pastor as appropriate.
- Work with the Finance Board to prepare and oversee the budget of the music department, keeping the Finance Board and the Pastor informed of the financial status and needs of the music department.
- Coordinate the custody and maintenance of property of the music program, including but not limited to music equipment, the sanctuary organ, choral robes, and music
- Coordinate special audio equipment needs with sound technicians and Audio-Visual Team in a timely and informative manner.
- Recruit members for the adult choir and any other music group. Plan and organize activities to grow the music program in the church which may include music specials, coordination with other area churches, and contribution of information for the church publications.
- If the Music Director is absent for any reason, he/she should assist the church in locating a substitute.
- Long Range Goal: Add children’s and/or youth choir.
