Hermon Baptist Church, Waxhaw, is seeking a pastor who is called to preach God’s Word and lead a mission-focused body of believers.  This role requires a servant-hearted leader who is committed to glorifying God, strengthening the church, and fulfilling the Great Commission.  Established in 1889, Hermon is a rural Southern Baptist church in Union County, one of the fastest growing counties in NC.  We are located near JAARS, so our congregation is made up of missionaries who have served around the world as well as local, life-long Union County natives.  We are blessed with a range of ages, from young families to senior adults. Our weekly calendar includes Sunday School and Worship for all ages, Sunday evening Bible study and activities for adults, youth and children, Celebrate Recovery, Wednesday prayer service and weekday Bible studies.  The current paid staff includes an Associate Pastor and Children’s Director.

Position: Full-Time Senior/Lead Pastor

Ordination & Licensing: Ordained and licensed minister

Education: Master of Divinity preferred (Southern Baptist college and/or seminary)

Experience: Minimum of three-five years in a ministry role, preferably as a preaching or lead pastor.

Preaching & Teaching:

  • An effective and compelling Bible teacher with a strong commitment to deliver biblically sound sermons that inspire spiritual growth and discipleship.
  • Expositional preaching, even in topical messages. Scripture remains primary.
  • Preaches with his life, embodying the Word in daily living.
  • Spirit-led, personal, and engaging, with a challenging and convicting style.
  • Captures the attention of all age groups, calling the congregation to repentance and growth.

 Ministry Priorities & Leadership:

  • Provides strong spiritual leadership, working with church staff and members to fulfill the church’s mission.
  • Emphasizes evangelism so that all may hear and believe.
  • Supports and leads missions by personal participation and example.
  • Develops leaders and empowers teams for ministry, fostering a team approach.
  • Fosters a culture of discipleship, equipping believers to grow in faith and share the gospel.
  • Collaborates with church leadership to oversee ministries, operations, and strategic planning.
  • Is diligent in prayer, sensitive to input from leaders and congregation, deliberate and thoughtful regarding change in the church.
  • Leads the disciplined Christian life exhibited by an exemplary attitude, vibrant personal devotional life, personal evangelism, and love for Jesus.

Shepherding & Community Engagement:

  • Engages personally with members, shepherding them with care and compassion.
  • Comfortable interacting with people from all walks of life.
  • Passionate about pastoral care, providing guidance, counseling, and support to members.
  • Encourages spiritual growth through discipleship and intentional relationships.
  • Leads with humility, integrity, and a heart for service.
  • Prioritizes a culture of prayer, worship, and mission-driven outreach.
  • Represents the church within the local community, fostering outreach and mission opportunities.

 Additional Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Must meet the Biblical qualifications described in 1 Timothy 3:1-7, Titus 1:5-9, and 1 Peter 5:1-4
  • Fully affirms and adheres to the statements of faith in the Baptist Faith and Message 2000
  • Demonstrates a clear calling by God to full-time pastoral ministry, led by the Holy Spirit. 
  • Exhibits strong biblical knowledge and preaching skills, effectively teaching and applying Scripture
  • Possesses excellent communication, interpersonal, and leadership abilities
  • Shows a genuine passion for ministry and a heart for shepherding God’s people
  • Is spiritually mature, ordained by a church body, and committed to the Southern Baptist faith 
  • Has experience in preaching, counseling, discipleship, and church leadership
  • Is willing to minister in alignment with the church’s statement of beliefs and bylaws
  • Demonstrates a strong work ethic, integrity, and a commitment to leading by example.
  • Demonstrates financial stewardship of personal assets.
