Our future pastor needs to know the sheep. To have the ability and desire to know the general overall strengths, weaknesses, traits, opportunities, and culture of the believers at Mount Vernon.  A pastor that will personally know individuals in the church in order to cultivate their spiritual maturity and needs. To be able to identify potential leaders and to know how to lead, equip, and protect the flock as a whole.

He needs to feed the sheep.  He should have a heart to feed the flock of God through Spirit filled preaching (conveying the original intent of the biblical authors and be able to demonstrate how that applies to the congregation). He should have involvement in personal discipleship (mentoring), and to offer and/or refer for biblical counseling.  His teaching and preaching should depend on the Holy Spirit for the purpose of awakening a thirst and love for the Lord Jesus Christ and an ever-increasing fulfillment in Him.  He needs to lead the sheep and the ministry staff in conjunction with the Elders.  

To lead by personal example by: 

• Knowing, loving, and a personal reverence for Christ personally. 
• Feeding personally on the Word of God and prayer on a daily basis. 
• Modeling the heart of the Chief Shepherd and living a Godly life. 
• Leading one’s own family in a way that makes much of Christ. 
• Supporting and being involved in church functions. 
• Discipling one-on-one and disciple making.  
• Leading by proclaiming, explaining, and ensuring the church’s Purpose/Mission/Values statement is clearly understood and carried out in all areas of church ministry.  
• Leading the church to grow spiritually and developing their ministry skills for the work of the ministry (individuals and corporately).
• Leading as a humble servant.

To lead the pastoral team and staff by:

• Serving by leading and leading by serving. By understanding that he is “chief among equals.”
• Recognizing the necessity and positive good for mutual, humble submission to one another in love and respect for each other.
• Encouraging and ensuring mutual growth in the pastoral team through time in the Word, study and prayer into a deeper relationship with Christ.
• Leading pastor meetings (utilizing appropriate delegation for agenda items).
• Working with our pastoral team to ensure that appropriate pastoral care of the flock is taking place.  He will work with our pastoral team to develop and ensure implementation of strategies that fulfill the church’s vision.
• Reporting to the Elders and working with the pastoral team to oversee the ministry and resources of the church.
• Recognizing that we are a multicultural church in membership with a worldwide missions outreach.

BIBLICAL /SPIRITUAL QUALIFICATIONS

1. Be a man called by God and evangelical in theology, in accordance with “The Baptist Faith and Message” (2000 edition) and be committed to living and serving in a manner consistent with the standards set forth in Scripture. (Titus 1:-8)  (Acts 20:28)  (Acts 6:4)  (Romans 12) 

1. Be endowed with these qualities:

Diligence (2 Peter 1:5-7): Be faithful to invest the spiritual gifts from God. Stability and conviction (I Cor.1S:S8): Be true to God’s Word and the Holy Spirit.

Vision (Hab. 2:3): Have foresight and insight to see what God sees.

Integrity (Proverbs 11:3): Keep God first and be true to Him and His Word. 

1. Shall preach the Word of God, be persistent in ministry, be courageous with confronting sin, and do the work of an evangelist to equip, educate, and edify the Church. (II Timothy 4: 2, 5)  

1. Through the empowerment of the Holy Spirit, have the Biblical gifts to preach and teach. Be a communicator of God’s Word in worship and ensure that the Church is growing to maturity in Jesus Christ. (Ephesians 4: 11-13)

QUALIFICATIONS

The Senior Pastor should have a minimum of five years of experience in a pastoral capacity. He will demonstrate competencies in the following categories:

1. Commitment to Results: As a spiritual leader and visionary of the church, he will be goal driven, mission focused, a problem solver, and a team player.
2. Innovative Thinker: He will deal effectively with demanding situations and implement innovative strategies as related to Mount Vernon Baptist Church.
3. Motivation: He will be action oriented to identify relevant goals for the church which will embrace and accomplish the mission and vision, both locally and globally.
4. Leadership: He will have an ability to provide a high level of leadership and administration for the staff and congregation.

RESPONSIBILITIES

1. In conjunction with the Elders, the Senior Pastor will have responsibility for Mount Vernon Baptist Church’s operations and establishment of a strong and appropriate relationship with Elders, Ministerial Staff, Deacons, and Ministry Teams such as Personnel and Finance Teams.

1. The Senior Pastor, through the teaching of the Holy Spirit, will participate in the planning of worship services, special events, oversee staff development, and equip staff and lay leaders to successfully fulfill their duties and responsibilities.

1. The Senior Pastor will support outreach and pastoral care efforts, and Biblical counseling. He will perform baptisms, weddings and conduct funeral services within the Bylaws and Constitution of Mount Vernon Baptist Church.  He will be a supporter and equipper of the various ministries at MVBC.
2. The Senior Pastor will nurture the church body by encouraging all believers to develop as disciples of Jesus Christ including baptism by immersion, church membership, Christian disciplines, and Biblical stewardship.

ACCOUNTABILITY

1. The Senior Pastor shall be accountable to God first, then to the Elders, as they represent the Church under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. 

1. The Senior Pastor shall attend scheduled Deacon meetings as needed and acts as an ex-officio member of all Ministry Teams.

1. The Senior Pastor shall always convey a professional image and positive attitude regarding Mount Vernon Baptist Church. He shall demonstrate a commitment to excellence in professional growth and development.
